Window vs Split AC: Which Has Better Scrap Value?

We often get asked which type of air conditioner pays more in scrap: a classic Window AC or a modern Split AC. The answer lies in the copper tubing density and compressor size.

Window AC Scrap Value

Older window AC units are generally heavier and contain denser copper coils and larger compressors. Because all components are housed in a single sturdy metal chassis, a 1.5 Ton Window AC often yields a higher scrap payout than a comparable split unit.

Split AC Scrap Value

Split ACs consist of an indoor evaporator unit (mostly plastic and light copper/aluminium fins) and an outdoor condenser unit (where the compressor and heavy coils reside). While still highly valuable, many modern split ACs use aluminium condenser coils to reduce weight and cost, which slightly lowers their scrap rate compared to pure copper window units.
